Sheffield Wednesday’s Steve Bruce jokes about the ‘Spygate’ saga involving Leeds United.
Steve Bruce has joked to Sky Sports that he sent Sheffield Wednesday staff members out to the training complex to see if Leeds United’s Marcelo Bielsa was hiding in the trees.
Bruce takes his Owls side to promotion-chasing Leeds in a big Yorkshire derby tomorrow evening.
Victory could see Bielsa’s side establish a four-point cushion in the automatic promotion places, if third-placed Sheffield United lose at home to Millwall in one of the 3pm kickoffs.
The Whites were fined £200,000 by the English Football League in February after the ‘Spygate’ scandal which saw Bielsa send a staff member to observe Derby County’s training session on the eve of facing Frank Lampard’s side.
It is the Argentine’s first season in English football and he looks every inch the world-class coach that he was known to be prior to arriving in the Championship.
And Bruce admits that Bielsa has been a ‘big tick’ for the English game.
He told Sky Sports: “He’s been a big tick. He’s been a bit off the wall, a bit different. All of us are intrigued by him.
“I sent scouts out today to see if he’s in the trees. He wouldn’t learn much because we’ll probably have a game of rugby today so let’s see what he thinks of that”.
Bruce has lost just one of his 13 Championship games since taking the reins at Sheffield Wednesday – a 3-1 home defeat by his former club Aston Villa last weekend.
Wednesday have been in flying form under Bruce for the most part and tomorrow is a big, big test for Leeds, even if it’s at Elland Road.
