Newcastle United’s hopes of winning a trophy are over for another season after losing 2-0 to Manchester City on Sunday evening.

The Magpies knew that the FA Cup was their last hope of silverware this season, but facing Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side was always going to be difficult.

City were dominant throughout, and claimed a 2-0 win as Kevin De Bruyne scored from the penalty spot before Raheem Sterling added a second.

With just 24% of possession, four shots, one shot on target and no corners, Newcastle were second best by a long way – but Steve Bruce found the ability to have a laugh following full time.

City star De Bruyne was giving his post-match interview, and Bruce hijacked it by joking that the Belgian was actually going to stay put at St James’ Park.

Bruce joked that it was exclusive news emerging from the club that De Bruyne would be joining the Magpies, giving fans a light-hearted moment after a tough defeat.

“He’s gonna stay here, he’s gonna stay here, he’s going to come here okay? That’s an exclusive out of Newcastle tonight, he’s had enough of Manchester City and he’s gonna come and play for Newcastle!” said Bruce.

The 29-year-old will likely never play for Newcastle given his £350,000-a-week wages and superstar status, but with the Magpies potentially being taken over, you can never really say never.
