Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has told The Chronicle that he thinks there aren’t many players around who can score Jetro Willems’ goal against Liverpool.

Bruce took his Magpies side to Anfield on Saturday afternoon for a daunting clash with Liverpool, but went with a glimmer of hope having already beaten Tottenham Hotspur away from home last month.

Newcastle did score a stunning early opener, as left wing back Willems drove forward at Trent Alexander-Arnold, cut inside on his weaker right foot and smashed an unstoppable drive into the goal.

That was an unexpected lead for Newcastle, but it sadly didn’t last as Sadio Mane grabbed a brace before half time and Mohamed Salah added a third in the second half.

Newcastle went home empty-handed, but left back Willems – a recent season-long loan signing from Eintracht Frankfurt – showed that he can be a real asset for Bruce this season.

With Matt Ritchie out of action, Willems has been given a chance at left wing back, and he certainly took his opportunity with a superb finish on Saturday.

Boss Bruce has now commented on Willems, admitting that he will get better in the Premier League once he adjusts, but gave him huge credit by saying that there aren’t many players who can match Willems’ goal against Liverpool, suggesting Newcastle have a real talent on their hands.

“Jetro will remember it. It’s not often you get on it and smash it into the right-hand corner with your right foot,” said Bruce. “He only came in five or six weeks ago and has been thrown in at the deep end. But the more he works physically and plays with the intensity, and gets used to the Premier League goal, you can see the ability he’s got.”

“There’s not many people can do that. I was delighted for him personally,” he added.
