Aston Villa are just seven points above the relegation zone, after getting beaten last night.

Steve Bruce has told BBC West Midlands Sport that Aston Villa supporters were ‘absolutely fantastic’ last night.

Villa were beaten 3-1 by Barnsley in front of their own supporters yesterday, as their terrible run of form continued.

Villa Park was not a happy place to be, with frustrations audible during and after the match.

However, Bruce insists that Villa fans were very supportive of his team last night, and he could have no complaints about the atmosphere.

He said: “Listen, the crowd were absolutely fantastic for what’s gone on and what stye have just witnessed.

“They are well within their rights to voice their concern. On the whole they were terrific, because it’s not easy for them – it’s not easy for any of us! A big thank you goes to them, because they stayed with it and tried their utmost.”

Villa started the brighter of the two teams last night, but they gave away a cheap penalty, which Adam Armstrong converted, and then failed to get back into the match.

Barnsley doubled their lead when Tom Bradshaw hit the back of the net, and although Jonathan Kodjia pulled one back, Bradshaw sealed the victory late on.

Villa are still winless in 2017, with Bruce now under serious pressure to get the claret and blues back on track soon.

Villa are currently in 16th place in the Championship table, just seven points above the bottom three.
