Aston Villa are looking for a new striker, after missing out on Leonardo Ulloa.

Steve Bruce has confirmed to the Express and Star that Aston Villa were interested in signing Leonardo Ulloa from Leicester City, but missed out.

Ulloa has joined Brighton & Hove Albion until the end of the season, with Villa now having to look at other targets.

And Bruce admits that he may now not sign a new striker this month, as he doesn’t want to panic buy.

“We had two particular targets. One has come off, one has gone to Brighton.

“Ideally, everyone would probably like four (strikers). But unless there is a someone around who I think will be different to what we have got. At the moment we are not close to anything.”

Villa had made signing a new striker their priority at the start of the month, but it is, perhaps, not such an urgent need now.

Scott Hogan’s form over the last few weeks has been highly impressive, which has eased Bruce’s concerns about his striking options.

Ulloa would have offered Villa a different sort of option for the second half of the campaign, but the lure of Premier League football was too much for the target-man, who opted to join Brighton.

Villa are currently in fifth place in the Championship table, and they sit just three points away from the automatic promotion spaces.

The claret and blues are next in action later this evening, when they take on Sheffield United.
