Steve Bruce comments on reported Leeds United target Dwight Gayle

Leeds United and Stoke City reportedly want Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle.

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has told The Chronicle that reported Leeds United and Stoke City target Dwight Gayle will not leave the club in the summer transfer window.

Gayle spent the 2018-19 campaign on loan at Championship club West Bromwich Albion from Premier League outfit Newcastle.

According to The Daily Star, Leeds are interested in signing the former Crystal Palace striker as a replacement for Kemar Roofe, who is set to join Belgian outfit Anderlecht, as reported by Dhnet.be.

The report has claimed of interest from Leeds’s Championship rivals Stoke City in the former Peterborough United striker as well.

Newcastle manager Gayle has said that Gayle will not leave the Magpies this summer and will be part of the his squad for the 2019-20 campaign.

Bruce told The Chronicle about Gayle: “I want to keep him. As I keep saying, you’re only as good as your strikers. In that areas we need a threat and Gayle has always been part of my plans.”

The Newcastle boss added: “I’ve tried to buy him before but not been able to afford him!”

Blow for Leeds United

With Roofe reportedly heading to Anderlecht, Gayle would be a brilliant replacement for the striker.

However, with Bruce saying that the 29-year-old will not leave the Magpies this summer, it will be a blow for Marcelo Bielsa’s side if they are unable to land Gayle this summer.
