Steve Bruce has told the Chronicle that Newcastle United youngster Matty Longstaff has already impressed him since he took the job at St. James’ Park.

Bruce has taken charge of just one Newcastle game so far, as he watched his side beat West Ham United 1-0 from the stands.

Longstaff was given game time in the contest, as he came off the substitutes’ bench, and his showing caught the eye.

Longstaff, played alongside his older brother, Sean, in central midfield.

And Bruce said at his latest press conference: “Sean’s brother played really well in the 20 minutes against West Ham.

“I thought he was excellent.

“There’s nothing better than a young one coming through.”

Whether Longstaff will be trusted to play in competitive fixtures at Newcastle now remains to be seen.

Sean has firmly established himself as a key player at St. James’ Park now, and there are high hopes that Matty could do the same in the future.

Newcastle are next in action Preston North End at the weekend, when Bruce will be in the dugout for the first time.
