Leeds United picked up a 1-0 win that has lifted the Whites three points clear of their main rivals in the Championship promotion race.

LEEDS, ENGLAND - APRIL 13:

In comments reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Steve Bruce has backed Leeds for promotion and suggested that the atmosphere inside Elland Road during Sheffield Wednesday’s 1-0 defeat was fantastic.

The Whites went into this weekend knowing their promotion hopes were back in their own hands after Sheffield United dropped points at Birmingham in midweek. And they were handed a further boost shortly before kick-off against the Owls.

The Blades conceded a 95th minute equaliser at home to Millwall, meaning that they only moved above Leeds on goal difference, presenting Marcelo Bielsa’s side with the opportunity to move three points clear.

Jack Harrison’s brilliant finish in the second-half proved to be the only goal in another enthralling game in the Championship. Leeds looked a class apart for much of the contest, but Wednesday had their chances after Keiren Westwood produced some inspired saves to keep the home side at bay.

And after suffering only his second defeat since arriving at Hillsborough, Bruce suggested that he could see Leeds being the ones to get over the line in the promotion race, while he also commented on what it was like to be at Elland Road on what could prove to be a pivotal afternoon in the season.

“The way the crowd are reminded me of what it was 20 years ago. You’d fancy them with the four games they’ve got. With what they’ve got going for them they’ve got an outstanding chance,” he said, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“What a place to have my 900th game. Abused from the moment I got off the bus! Nothing’s changed. I hate to say it but the atmosphere was fantastic.”

Leeds clearly find themselves in the driving seat, but Marcelo Bielsa will be desperate to make sure that no-one within his squad believes that they are anywhere near the finishing line just yet. They still have a tricky run ahead and Sheffield United’s better goal difference makes that three-point advantage slightly more precarious.

But after a week in which they collected four more points than their main promotion rivals, it does appear that all of the momentum is with Leeds right now.
