Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has told The Chronicle that he felt Joelinton had ‘a frustrating night’ against Blackburn Rovers.

The Magpies were in Carabao Cup action on Tuesday night, and managed to sneak through with a 1-0 victory.

Ryan Fraser marked his debut with a goal, racing onto Miguel Almiron’s pass to fire the winner past Thomas Kaminski.

Newcastle weren’t particularly impressive, and Blackburn had much of the ball and the chances but just couldn’t score.

Arguably the most disappointing performance came from striker Joelinton, who was given a chance to shine in attack.

The Brazilian looks to have been jumped by new signing Callum Wilson in the Newcastle pecking order, and after just two goals last season, his importance seems to be waning.

Bruce commented on his display, admitting that it was a ‘frustrating’ night for him – but he must now ‘get on with the challenge’ facing him.

“He has to dust himself down and get on with the challenge,” said Bruce. “He had a frustrating night, it is fair to say,” he added.
