Gabriel Agbonlahor scored his first Aston Villa goal of the season against Birmingham City yesterday.
Steve Bruce has admitted to Aston Villa’s official website that Gabriel Agbonlahor is playing for his future at Villa Park.
Agbonlahor has endured a very difficult season at Villa, and he has barely made an impact throughout the campaign.
However, the experienced striker came off the bench yesterday, to score the winner in a 1-0 victory over Birmingham City.
And Bruce admits that he Agbonlahor still has work to do to save his Villa career, leaving the rapid forward’s future looking very uncertain.
“He’s got a big important summer now,” Bruce said.
“He’s coming into the last year of his contract. He’s got to, for the first time in years, earn a new contract. I hope he grasps it.
“He must make sure he looks after himself and keeps himself in good condition. If he does that, we have a very good centre-forward.”
Agbonlahor’s goal against Birmingham was his first of the campaign, with the 30-year-old previously struggling to hit the back of the net.
There have been many suggestions that Agbonlahor could leave Villa in the summer, but yesterday’s strike may have given the forward a lifeline.
Agbonlahor could now feature for Villa again, before the end of the season.
Bruce’s side have two more games to play this season, against Blackburn Rovers and Brighton & Hove Albion.
