Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace.

Newcastle United's Manager Steve Bruce during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Preston North End and Newcastle United at Deepdale on July 27, 2019 in Preston, England.

Steve Bruce has admitted to the Chronicle that he’s had to have a ‘quiet word’ with Ciaran Clark about his Newcastle United future.

Clark has beed linked with a move away from Newcastle in the past few days, with The Sun suggesting that Crystal Palace were keen on buying him for £5 million.

However, Bruce does not want to sell the centre-back, even though he is likely to be a covering option at St. James’ Park again next season.

“The way we are with the injury to Lejeune and playing with three centre backs, if I let something happen to Ciaran Clark, we’d leave ourselves a bit short,” he said.

“I can’t really do that… I’ve had a quiet word with him and we move on.”

Clark has struggled to break into Newcastle’s team recently, as they have so much quality at centre-back.

Clark appears to be behind Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune and Federico Fernandez in the pecking order for places at St. James’ Park.

Clark didn’t play a part for Newcastle yesterday in their friendly against Hibernian, although he did travel to Scotland with the rest of their squad.

Newcastle won the contest 3-1, with goals coming from Joelinton, Lascelles and Sean Longstaff.
