The striker scored two goals for Aston Villa against Brentford last night.

Steve Bruce, Manager of Aston Villa acknowledges the fans prior to the Sky Bet Championship match between Aston Villa and Brentford at Villa Park on August 22, 2018 in Birmingham, England.

Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce spoke to reporters in the aftermath of his side’s 2-2 draw with Brentford at Villa Park last night, and raved about the performance of Jonathan Kodjia, suggesting that having the Ivorian back is like having a new signing, as quoted by the club’s official website.

The 28-year-old joined Aston Villa from Bristol City in the summer of 2016, for a fee believed to be worth somewhere in the region of £11 million, and he has gone on to score 23 goals in 55 appearances in all competitions.

Injuries wreaked havoc with Kodjia’s 2017/18 campaign, however, and Villa really missed the big striker’s presence through the middle.

He is back and firing now, though, and when speaking to reporters, Bruce offered high words of praise for the Villa hitman, suggesting that nobody could have scored the goal that he scored last night, as quoted by the club’s official website:

Steve Bruce, manager of Aston Villa talks to the press during a press conference at the club's training ground at Bodymoor Heath on August 10, 2018 in Birmingham, England.

“All last year we missed him. It’s always difficult when you’re overcoming an injury like the one he had. He’s starting to show glimpses of just why we missed him so much. He’s getting there – his physical stats were great on Saturday. He led the line well again tonight. Only he could score that first goal – it was out of nothing. He’s produced that little bit of magic in the box to wriggle past his defenders and smash it home. His second goal, the header, was excellent, too. It’s good to see, it’s like having a new signing. Long may it continue.”

Next up for Villa is another home game, this time against Paul Clement’s struggling Reading side, and Kodjia will be hoping to fire his side to a victory by adding to his goal tally this season.
