Steve Bruce assesses Anwar El Ghazi’s Aston Villa debut

Anwar El Ghazi made an impressive debut as Aston Villa drew their latest Championship game.

Steve Bruce has told Aston Villa’s official website that he was particularly impressed by Anwar El Ghazi’s debut performance for the club and suggested that he is excited about his potential once he gets up to speed.

El Ghazi became one of the Villans’ latest signings this week as he joined the club on loan from Lille as the Championship side look to make up for lost time in the transfer market. Yannick Bolasie’s loan move from Everton has now also been confirmed.

And the 23-year-old introduced himself in superb fashion on his debut as he bagged the assist for Villa’s goal, providing the cross that allowed Ahmed Elmohamady to break the deadlock six minutes into the second-half.

It was not to be a winning debut for the former Ajax youngster however, as Sam Baldock scored a stoppage-time penalty to ensure that the points were shared. Nevertheless, Bruce was impressed with the newbie’s performance.

“He had a good day and you could see flashes of how technically good he is,” he told the club’s official website.

“He’s got excellent pace, and once he’s settled in England I’m sure he’s going to be a very decent player for us.”

The Villa fans may feel slightly deflated following a draw at home to a struggling Reading side who equalised with a late spot-kick, but given the events of earlier this summer, they are undoubtedly not in a bad position at all with Bruce’s men currently fourth in the Championship.

And if Bruce is correct and there is more to come from El Ghazi, then he could perhaps prove to be an incredible loan signing for the Villans over the course of the season.
