Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce hasn’t been able to play Dwight Gayle at all.
Bruce has spoken positively of Gayle since arriving at Newcastle, and fought hard to keep him at St. James’ Park this summer, after rumours he could leave for £20 million emerged in the Northern Echo.
However, the striker has not been able to repay his manager’s faith yet.
Gayle has been out with injury since the very start of the campaign, with the Newcastle striker still not available.
And Bruce admits that he is becoming very concerned with Gayle’s fitness levels.
Bruce said: “Dwight’s a big disappointment for me because I have now been here for six, seven weeks but this injury has not got any better – which is a big concern to all of us.”
If Gayle can return to action soon it would be a boost for Newcastle, as he could increase their goalscoring threat.
Newcastle have struggled to find a prolific scorer so far this term, although new signing Joelinton has shown signs of promise.
Gayle could face serious competition for a place in Bruce’s side when he does return to fitness, as Andy Carroll and Yoshinori Muto will also be vying for a place when he makes it off the treatment table.
