The Sheffield Wednesday midfielder made a rare appearance for the Owls’ Under-23s on Monday.
The recently exiled Almen Abdi still has a future at Sheffield Wednesday, according to the Owls’ assistant manager, Steve Agnew.
Abdi last played for Wednesday’s first-team at Bristol City in March last year, when Jos Luhukay was in charge at Hillsborough, but made a rare appearance for the Yorkshire club’s under-23s on Monday afternoon.
Asked ahead of a 3-2 defeat for Neil Thompson’s side at home to Bolton Wanderers whether Abdi was part of the new regime’s plans, Agnew told the official Sheffield Wednesday Facebook page: “Yeah, I think [that’s the case for] any player contracted to the football club.
“When Steve Bruce came in and spoke to the players he said, ‘look, it’s a clean slate, show us what you’ve got, however you can do that’.
“[For] the players that have been out the first team for a number of months or weeks, if there’s an opportunity in an under-23 game to show us what they are capable of then all the better for us to have the availability of more players.”
Abdi is reported to have cost Wednesday around £3 million from Watford two-and-a-half-years ago.
But the Switzerland international has only played 23 times for the Owls since then, scoring once and failing to provide a single assist.
He turned 32 last October, and has less than six months left on his contract – which is believed to be one of the most lucrative at Hillsborough.
