Tottenham have snapped up striker Vincent Janssen.
Netherlands striker Vincent Janssen celebrates a goal against Austria
Tottenham completed their second signing of the summer on Tuesday, as striker Vincent Janssen was snapped up from AZ Alkmaar – and Steve Archibald has offered his view.
Having secured Victor Wanyama from Southampton last month, manager Mauricio Pochettino turned his attention to bringing in a new striker given that the exhausted Harry Kane started every Premier League game last season.
Netherlands’ Vincent Janssen in action with England’s John Stones
The man Pochettino moved for was Dutch hitman Vincent Janssen, who enjoyed a dream first season with AZ Alkmaar, having only joined from Almere City last summer.
With 27 league goals, Janssen finished as the Eredivisie’s top goalscorer, whilst the 22-year-old also notched two goals in other competitions and three goals in five caps for the Netherlands national team.
Now though, Janssen is on his way to White Hart Lane, and will be competing with Kane for a starting role in Pochettino’s side next season.
Poland’s Arkadiusz Milik shoots at goal against Northern Ireland
Fans have been largely pleased with the deal, and even asked Spurs legend Steve Archibald for his views on Tottenham’s newest signing.
Archibald stated that playing in England could be more difficult for Janssen than in the Eredivisie, as players like Afonso Alves and Mateja Kezman have found over the years.
Archibald also pondered whether Janssen could play alongside Kane rather than purely as a backup to Tottenham’s leading man, before suggesting another player Spurs should have targeted.
Poland’s Arkadiusz Milik scores during the penalty shootout against Portugal
Ajax’s Arkadiusz Milik impressed for Poland at the European Championships this summer, and hit 21 goals for Ajax last season, finishing behind Luuk de Jong and Janssen in the Eredivisie scoring charts.
Archibald suggested that Milik could have been a great fit for Kane having starred for club and country – and only time will tell whether Spurs have signed the right Eredivisie hitman.
