Jose Mourinho has raved about reported Arsenal target Raheem Sterling on talkSPORT.

The former Tottenham Hotspur manager has said that Sterling was “amazing” for City the season before last.

However, the AS Roma manager does not think that the City attacking midfielder will become the top scorer for England at Euro 2020.

The former Liverpool star, who has also play as a winger, has scored three goals in his three appearances for the Three Lions at the European Championship so far.

Arsenal interest

Eurosport reported last month that Arsenal are interested in signing Sterling from Premier League rivals City in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners have reportedly enquired about bringing the 26-year-old to the Emirates Stadium.

What Jose Mourinho has said

Mourinho said on talkSPORT: “He (Sterling) did amazing for City, last season was not amazing for him but the two seasons before, he plays wide, he plays centre-forward.

“The coach uses him in different situations. We look at Harry Kane and look at good players to play with Harry, he needs depth in the team, speed in the team.

“In the national team, Sterling is doing this for them. No, I wouldn’t expect Sterling to be the best scorer and no I don’t think he will be the top scorer. Harry Kane in the next two matches will score two or three goals easy.”

Encouraging

Mourinho knows a quality player when he sees one.

After all, the Portuguese is the ‘Special One’.

Sterling did not have a great season on a personal level in 2020-21, but in 2019-20, he was brilliant.

The City no.7 scored 20 goals in the Premier League and six goals in the Champions League in 2019-20.

Sterling is showing this summer just how good he is, and Arsenal would be a better and more potent team with the 26-year-old in it.

City paid Liverpool an initial £44 million for Sterling in 2015, as reported by BBC Sport at the time, and the Premier League champions are likely to demand at least as much, if not more.
