Stephen Warnock has claimed that the ‘writing is on the wall’ for Christian Eriksen after he was left out of Tottenham’s starting XI for their defeat to Newcastle on Sunday.

It was a lacklustre performance from Spurs, who clearly missed Eriksen’s presence in the middle of the park, but even his second-half introduction couldn’t change things.

But after the game, Mauricio Pochettino admitted that his squad is ‘unsettled’ as the future of a number of his players is coming into question, as quoted by Sky Sports.

Speaking to Football Centre on Sky Sports News (26/08/2019 10:10 am), former Aston Villa defender Warnock admits that the Eriksen situation is ‘strange’.

“It must be in the players head,” Warnock told Sky Sports News. “It must be something to do with the player or Pochettino believing that he is going to go and they want to get as much money as possible for him if he is to leave.

“But you have got to play him. You have got to play him in these types of games where you need a key player to pick out a killer pass. To find the runs of Harry Kane or Lucas Moura. Stranger decision. Almost looks like the writing is on the wall that he is going to leave.”

This should have been the time where Tottenham were looking to take the next step, especially after they moved into their new stadium recently.

But despite the North London club reaching the Champions League final last season, it seems as though a lot of things have gone downhill since then.

If Tottenham are to get back to their best then Eriksen, who signed for the club in 2013 for a fee in the region of £12 million [BBC Sport], will need to be starting and performing on a regular basis.
