Leeds United are in a healthy position at the top of the league ahead of Friday night’s game against Sheffield Wednesday.

LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 15:

Stephen Warnock has urged Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa to spend in January to avoid trouble in their bid for promotion this season.

The Whites are currently top of the Championship table after nine games and are looking like one of the strongest teams in the division.

Bielsa’s high intensity tactics have been put into immediate effect at the Yorkshire giants and supporters are beginning to dream of a return to the Premier League.

But there are concerns about the size of the squad and they have had to deal with a spate of injury problems to key players already this campaign.

Warnock, who previously enjoyed a two-year spell at Elland Road as a player, has claimed that Bielsa has to strengthen midway through the season to stay in the mix for promotion.

“He said at the start of the season that he wants a small squad to work with,” Warnock told the Express.

“Now I thought that was a massive problem straight away because of the way they press the ball.

“I think they will have to strengthen in January otherwise they will be in trouble.”

Leeds do have an excellent core group of players at their disposal and there are around 15-16 players that are really pushing for a spot in the starting XI.

But over a gruelling 46-game league season they will need the bodies and rotation is going to be key during busy fixture schedules.

Leeds will be keen to continue their momentum away to Sheffield Wednesday on Friday, but lost both fixtures to the Owls last season and have faded away before in previous year after promising starts.
