Celtic tried to sign Motherwell goalkeeper Trevor Carson in January, but failed to complete a deal.
Motherwell managed Stephen Robinson has confirmed to the Glasgow Evening Times that Celtic tried to sign goalkeeper Trevor Carson in the January transfer window – but were well below the asking price.
It is believed that the Hoops made multiple bids in an attempt to lure former Cheltenham Town goalkeeper Carson, 30, to Celtic before the close of the January transfer window. But the Daily Record reported that Well wanted £750,000.
The report claimed that Celtic only offered about half of that figure, and instead Brendan Rodgers’ side opted to sign Dundee goalkeeper Scott Bain on loan until the end of the season.
Robinson confirmed the Bhoys’ offer, but stated that the Scottish champions were well below the asking price as Carson continues to impress for the Well this season.
“We had an honest chat, and it wasn’t enough money,” Robinson said, on Celtic’s bid.
“It was an opportunity for Trevor, but once he knew that the opportunity wasn’t there – and I was dictating when he would go, not him or agents or anyone else – he has knuckled down and he’s been superb.”
Carson is set to start between the sticks on Sunday as Celtic travel to Fir Park to face the Northern Irish goalkeeper and the rest of the Motherwell squad, with the Hoops looking to maintain their nine-point lead.
But Carson, who is somewhat of a journeyman from his time in the Football League after spells with Cheltenham, Portsmouth, Bury, Hartlepool, Chesterfield and Lincoln, will be looking to secure his 14th clean sheet of the season.
