Stephen Elliott has supported Jack Ross’s stance on Sunderland’s performances.

According to The Chronicle, Ross reacted ‘angrily’ to criticism of Sunderland’s recent displays, which some have complained aren’t especially easy on the eye.

But as the Mackems manager went on to point out, his side have, after Saturday’s 3-1 win at Accrington Stanley, recorded “(o)ne defeat in nine this season,” and “six wins in the last seven”.

He later argued: “If you win football matches it’s how you win leagues and win promotion.

“It’s an absolute fallacy to believe a team that wins promotion or a league title plays good every weekend. It’s absolute nonsense.

“In reality they probably play well in 50 per cent of their games and then grind out wins in the other games.”

And in Elliott’s eyes, those of a player who played 83 times in Sunderland colours, Ross’s response represents a pleasing change of approach.

Posting on Twitter earlier (Tuesday), Elliott wrote: “First time Jack has showed a bit of fire and think it’s a good thing.

“Instead of his usual ‘yeah I know there’s pressure at this club etc!!!” which makes you think he doesn’t feel he is up to task.

“He’s right if results are good then that’s all that matters in this league. #safc

Sunderland are fifth in League One, the same position in which the Mackems finished last season before they lost in the play-off final, ahead of tonight’s visit of Rotherham United.

But the Wearside club could go top of the table with a win, and have a game in hand on the divisional leaders, Coventry City.
