Marcus Harness put Pompey in the lead midway through the first half, and 22-year-old defender Willis restored parity for the Black Cats on 27 minutes.
Jack Ross’s side scored in the 39th minute through Chris Maguire, and it eventually finished 2-1 to the home team.
Former Sunderland forward Elliott was following the match, and he was impressed with the performance of Willis.
The defender was at fault for Portsmouth goal, but the former Coventry City star made up for it with his header for the equalising goal and played ell at the back in the second half.
