Stephen Curry and the Warriors may be pivoting from Giannis Antetokounmpo to LeBron James, creating the wildest possible endgame for an era-defining rivalry.

Golden State’s Giannis pursuit appears to have stalled, leaving the franchise looking for a final star swing around Curry.

That is where LeBron becomes fascinating, because he is entering free agency after a season that still proved he can help a contender immediately.

Stephen Curry gives Warriors a LeBron James pivot

ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel reported that Golden State is open to pursuing James after missing on Antetokounmpo, with Curry expected to take a direct role in the pitch.

“League sources telling us at ClutchPoints that the Warriors are very much open to pursuing LeBron James and they plan to do so this offseason in free agency. They struck out on the Giannis deal. They know that is not going to happen for them. That ship has sailed… LeBron James, at the end of his career, could still contribute at a high level. We saw that in the playoffs. Pairing him with Stephen Curry is going to be something that the Warriors look to pursue over the next few weeks.”

“It seemed very doubtful [James moving to the Bay Area], it seemed low percentage; now, it’s kind of questionable,” Siegel continued. “There’s going to be some legs to this. That same source told us that Steph is planning on meeting and talking with LeBron about potentially joining the Warriors over the course of the next few weeks, leading up to free agency.”

James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in 60 games for the Lakers, then lifted that to 23.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 6.7 assists in the 2026 NBA Playoffs.

The Warriors’ clean legal offer is the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, projected around $15.1 million. Anything bigger likely needs a sign-and-trade and Lakers cooperation.

LeBron James staying with the Lakers looks cleaner than joining the Warriors

The Lakers remain the more logical win-now destination because they can pay James the most and already have a stronger title structure around Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and their own cap flexibility.

Golden State offers emotion, not simplicity. James and Curry met in four straight Finals from 2015 to 2018, with Curry’s Warriors winning three of them.

That history would make any partnership explosive. It would also ruffle feathers because James would be teaming up with his greatest all-time rival at the end of his 24th season.

The basketball fit is still tempting. Curry’s shooting gravity would give James cleaner lanes, while James’ passing would create easier looks for a Warriors offense that needs another organizer.

But the money, the rivalry, and the Lakers’ clearer path make this a difficult jump. Curry can recruit, but LeBron has to decide how much legacy discomfort he is willing to absorb for one last chase.
