Rangers have completed five January deals at Ibrox this month.
Former Motherwell defender Stephen Craigan has claimed in his BT Sport column that Aberdeen will be wary of Rangers’ improved squad following Graeme Murty’s January overhaul.
The Gers have confirmed a permanent deal for left-back Declan John, as well as securing loan deals for Scotland internationals Russell Martin and Jason Cummings as well as Sean Goss and Jamie Murphy.
Murty has also opted to recall Andy Halliday from Azerbaijani side FK Gabala and Michael O’Halloran from St. Johnstone, giving the Gers side a completely new outlook ahead of their return to competitive football.
Craigan believes the Gers are now too far behind Old Firm rivals Celtic, but believes the newly-improved squad will be a huge concern to Aberdeen in the race for second place.
“Rangers are certainly in a stronger position squad wise than they were at the beginning of the month. Graeme Murty has been busy and it was certainly needed,” Craigan said.
“Andy Halliday, Jamie Murphy, Sean Goss, Jason Cummings and Russell Martin will make Rangers a better team of that I’ve no doubt. Will they challenge Celtic for the title? Probably not, but it will give them extra impetus to gain 2nd place.
“Celtic are out of sight at the minute for the Ibrox men, but Aberdeen will be looking at Rangers and will be slightly worried by their transfer business.”
Rangers go up against Aberdeen in a hugely important clash in the battle for second spot on Wednesday night, with Murty’s side favourites thanks to home advantage at Ibrox.
The Gers will also draw confidence from their matches against Derek McInnes’ side this season, which has seen them win on both occasions – beating Aberdeen 3-0 at home and 2-1 at Pittodrie.
