Stephen Craigan claims Rangers signing Steven Davis should be at his peak at 34-years-old

Rangers re-signed Steven Davis from Premier League side Southampton this month.

BT Sport pundit Stephen Craigan has astonishingly claimed that Rangers midfielder Steven Davis ‘should be at his peak’ despite the club’s new signing coming towards the end of his career.

The Northern Ireland international, who previously played at Ibrox for a four-year period, re-joined the club this month on a six-month loan deal from Premier League side Southampton.

Nonetheless, despite Davis celebrating his 34th birthday on New Year’s Day, Craigan’s comments on him potentially being at his ‘peak’ didn’t sit too well with former Celtic man Chris Sutton.

“I think Steve Davis [is the signing of the January transfer window],” Craigan told BT Sport. “The quality he has, the age he his at, he should be in his peak.”

Sutton responded by saying: “Is he not a bit old? The age, he’s not going to be at his peak at 34, is he?”

Davis, who came through the ranks at Aston Villa as a youngster, has played in England’s top-flight and Scotland’s top-flight since making his debut in 2004.

Many Gers supporters will be hoping that Davis’ experience in the game will help Gerrard and his side in their push for the Scottish Premiership title.

Gerrard gave him his second debut in a Rangers shirt on Wednesday night when they suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss at title rivals Kilmarnock.

Despite only playing 70 minutes for the club, Davis produced a steady display at Rugby Park and provided the assist for fellow new signing Jermain Defoe, who opened the scoring.

But 10 minutes later, defender Joe Worrall was caught in possession and the home team equalised through Eamonn Brophy before Jordan Jones netted the winning striker in the second half – he will be joining Rangers in the summer.

That defeat puts third-placed Rangers three points behind current leaders Celtic in the table, who have a game in hand on their rivals, with second-placed Kilmarnock one point behind the Glasgow club.
