BT Sport pundit Stephen Craigan has admitted that he sees potential in Celtic duo Jozo Simunovic and Kristoffer Ajer for next season.

Both players have built a solid partnership at the heart of the club’s defence in recent weeks and most recently helped their side record a 1-0 win over Kilmarnock.

Out of the two, Ajer is the younger player at the age of 21, whilst his injury-plagued centre-back partner is three years older than him.

Speaking to BT Sport, as posted on their official Twitter account, Craigan spoke about Celtic’s defence next season and particularly praised Ajer, who he admitted ‘may make mistakes’.

“Simunovic is going to be key [next season] and Ajer is going to be key,” Craigan told BT Sport. “I think he’s getting better. We forget he’s only 21. That’s young to be playing at the heart of such a big team.

On whether he sees potential in Simunovic and Ajer growing together: “Yes, I do. I still think they’ll need another one. We have seen with the injuries to Simunovic. The youthfulness of Ajer, he may make mistakes and errors as he goes on. They talk about Ajer being quick.”

Out of the two, Ajer is arguably the more impressive defender given what he can do with the ball as a centre-back. But Simunovic has struggled with injuries this season which has prevented him from trying to prove his worth.

On Saturday, the Bhoys recorded a 1-0 win over Kilmarnock, which meant that they have won their last four games in all competitions, including beating Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

In all of those encounters, Neil Lennon’s side are yet to concede a goal and they will be hoping to continue that run as the Premiership season draws to a close.

Celtic are ever so close to confirming their champions status, whilst the fans will also have an eye on winning the Scottish Cup next month with Hearts standing in their way of more glory.
