Stephen A. Smith has given his latest update on a possible political career, beginning with an attempt at running for US President.

Stephen A. Smith says he is giving serious thought to a 2028 presidential campaign, describing the idea as a matter of responsibility rather than ambition.

The longtime ESPN commentator has often joked about politics, but his recent remarks suggest a shift in tone. What once seemed playful now sounds like a conversation he is prepared to take seriously.

Stephen A. Smith signals real interest in a possible 2028 run

In an interview on ABC News Live Prime, Stephen A. Smith said he is “dead serious” about exploring a presidential campaign.

He explained that the move would be about duty, not ego, and that he understands the weight such a step would carry.

Smith added that friends and advisers believe the current political climate could favour an outsider willing to challenge established figures. He said he would not hesitate to confront long-time politicians if he chose to run.

Despite that encouragement, Smith stressed that no formal decision will come before 2027. He described himself as a registered Independent and said he is weighing whether “the responsibility outweighs the cost.”

Career stability meets new political curiosity for Stephen A. Smith

Stephen A. Smith, 58, recently agreed to a reported five-year, $100 million deal with ESPN and continues to appear across television and film projects. He admitted that entering politics would require major lifestyle changes and personal sacrifices.

He voiced similar thoughts on Real Time with Bill Maher last August, calling a future campaign “possible” while expressing concern over the Democratic Party’s direction.

Although no campaign organisation exists, his latest comments indicate that the idea now carries genuine consideration.

For now, Smith says his focus remains on reflection rather than campaigning. What began as casual banter has evolved into a discussion about responsibility and leadership that could soon move beyond the sports world.
