VFL Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schafer believes Wout Weghorst should turn down a move to Tottenham Hotspur because of the presence of Harry Kane and Heung Min Son in north London, speaking to Sportschau.
Shortly after Jose Mourinho made his desire public for a new number nine before the October transfer deadline, the Englishman and South Korean combined to provide a timely reminder of their world-class quality.
Tottenham were a goal down and lacking any semblance of cutting edge or creativity at Southampton. However, a clinically taken Son strike on the stroke of the interval changed everything.
By the time the full-time whistle echoed around a deserted St Mary’s stadium, Mourinho was celebrating a 5-2 thumping that had seemed impossible with 40 minutes on the clock.
With assist-machine Kane taking on the Christian Eriksen role, Son battered his way into an exclusive Premier League club by scoring four goals in a single game for the first time in his career.
So the question isn’t whether Tottenham need Weghorst – it’s whether Weghorst needs Tottenham.

The Express reports this old-school, battle-scarred number nine is ready to be part of a £27 million gamble and swap Wolfsburg for Tottenham.
But, with his place in Holland’s squad under threat heading towards the Euros, Schafer obviously feels his star man would be better off playing regularly in Germany rather than risk warming the bench in England.
“Son scored four times, Kane scored (too). So Wout should stay with us,” the VFL director said of the late-blooming target man, who looks every inch a classic Mourinho striker.
For what it’s worth, Weghorst played down speculation after Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga opener this weekend.
“If (a move) happens, then it will. But I don’t think that’s an issue today,” said the 6ft 6in striker, who has scored 38 times in two seasons at Wolfsburg.
