The midfielder moved to Liverpool from Newcastle in the summer transfer window.
Eleven games into the Premier League season and things are going well for Liverpool.
They sit top of the table, a point clear of second-placed Chelsea, and look set for a strong title challenge this year.
The attention has been firmly on their attacking stars so far, with Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all shining and taking the headlines.
Their performances have been built on more than their attacking prowess, though, with the whole team now working as an efficient unit under Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum scores their sixth goal
One of those who has been quietly going about their business is midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, who has played a key role as part of a midfield three alongside Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana.
The Dutchman arrived at the club from Newcastle United in the summer and has so far proved to be a smart purchase.
Indeed, a look at his stats compared to the same period last year shows he has improved in no less than five key areas.
| Team | Season | Won Tackles per Game | Ball Recoveries per Game | Accurate Passes per Game | Successful Final Third Passes per Game | Key Passes per Game | Passing Accuracy | Assists | Goals | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Georginio Wijnaldum | Newcastle | 2015-2016 | 0.64 | 6.73 | 29.27 | 9.55 | 1.36 | 85% | 1 | 6 | 11 | 970 |
| Georginio Wijnaldum | Liverpool | 2016-2017 | 0.6 | 4.8 | 35.4 | 12.5 | 1.5 | 87% | 2 | 1 | 10 | 660 |
His passing has taken a notable increase, with him now registering more accurate passes per game, 35.4 compared to 29.9 and more successful final third passes per game, 12.5 compare to 9.5.
He is also registering more key passes per game and enjoying a better overall passing accuracy than this time last season.
Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum celebrates scoring their sixth goal
That has seen an improvement in his assist tally, having posted two compared to one.
Surprisingly he has fallen in the defensive stats, posting fewer won tackles and fewer ball recoveries while his goal tally has also taken a hit.
Nonetheless, a noticeable improvement from Wijnaldum elsewhere and Liverpool will be hoping there is more to come as they eye the title.
