Stats offer mixed assessment of Kemar Roofe’s display in Leeds’ draw with Wigan

With Stuart Dallas injured and Alex Mowatt underwhelming against Derby, it was hardly a surprise when Garry Monk decided to select Kemar Roofe at left wing for Leeds United’s clash with Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night.

With Roofe struggling to stand out following his summer move to Elland Road, he would have known how important it was that he took his opportunity, especially as it had seen him handed his first league start for the Whites since August.

But did he take that chance during the 1-1 draw against the Latics?

Here is a look at some of the important statistics from the former Oxford United man’s display against Wigan.

Unfortunately for the 23-year-old, the obvious statistics that stand out are the ones that confirm that he failed to register a single shot on target or an accurate cross throughout the game.

Considering that the striker was deployed as a wide-man, it will certainly be a disappointment that he was not able to make more of a contribution going forward. He did however, manage to make three successful dribbles which will be much more encouraging for Monk.

While Roofe’s performance going forward seems to have been below par, he certainly deserves credit for his defensive contribution.

One of the reasons why Stuart Dallas was able to force his way back into Monk’s plans before his injury was the partnership he formed with Charlie Taylor on the left flank.

The pair’s understanding allowed the left-back to go on the overlap and move into a much more advanced position than Dallas. And what will please Monk is that Roofe appeared to be more than willing to offer something defensively.

He won six duels – only Kalvin Phillips and Luke Ayling won more during the contest – and managed to also make a successful interception.

And considering that he was played out of his natural position, and that he has not started a league game for over two months, Roofe has arguably just about done enough to deserve to start once again when Leeds take on Wolves at the weekend.
