Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse boasts a better strike rate than Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Chelsea’s Diego Costa.
There were a whole host of statistics to come out of Newcastle United’s victory over Chelsea on Saturday which raised a few eyebrows.
The obvious starting point is the end of the Blues’ unbeaten start to the season, with a 2-1 reversal at St James’ Park seeing their lead cut to just three points.
There were also the struggles endured by the away team’s midfield, with Jose Mourinho unaccustomed to seeing his side squander possession so frequently.
Then, there is Papiss Cisse and his remarkable return to form for the Magpies.
A man who mustered just two Premier League goals in the entire 2013/14 campaign, and eight the season before that, has already hit seven this term.
Two of those came against Chelsea, with the Senegalese hit-man now boasting the most prolific strike rate in the English top-flight.
| Team | Goals | Total Scoring Att | Ontarget Scoring Att | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sergio Agüero | Man City | 14 | 74 | 34 | 15 | 1,053 |
| Diego Costa | Chelsea | 11 | 39 | 23 | 12 | 1,006 |
| Alexis Sánchez | Arsenal | 9 | 41 | 20 | 14 | 1,141 |
| Charlie Austin | QPR | 8 | 48 | 20 | 14 | 1,194 |
| Papiss Demba Cissé | Newcastle | 7 | 24 | 10 | 9 | 462 |
Only four players have bettered Cisse’s tally so far this season, but even they cannot get close to his goals-to-minutes ratio.
The Newcastle man nets on average every 66 minutes – some return for a player competing against the best in the business.
Manchester City frontman Aguero is the closest challenger to the Magpies hot-shot, as he can be broken down to a goal every 75.2 minutes.
Chelsea’s Diego Costa just tips over the goal-a-game mark to 91.5, while in-from Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez beats a goalkeeper every 126.8 minutes and Queens Park Rangers marksman Charlie Austin every 149.3.
