Everton sign player with seventh-best minutes-per-goal ratio last season

Everton’s latest signing performed better last season than many might have thought.

Everton have signed Samuel Eto’o on a free transfer following the player’s departure from Chelsea at the end of last season.

It is another coup for Toffees manager Roberto Martinez, who regularly impresses with his savvy transfer business.

The 33-year-old will now compete with his former Chelsea teammate Romelu Lukaku for a starting-berth at Goodison Park and it will be interesting to see how the two players perform together – assuming they can get in ahead of the season’s star-performer to date Steven Naismith.

Some will say Eto’o is well past his best but despite his age, the Cameroon international scored some vital goals last season, and not just against the league’s smaller clubs.

Eto’o netted nine Premier League goals last season, including his famous hat-trick against Manchester United. He also scored against Tottenham, Arsenal (during just 10 minutes on the pitch) and Liverpool.

In short, Everton have signed a player who is capable of changing the biggest of matches.

The striker also had the seventh most impressive minutes-to-goals ratio in the league last season, with only the usual suspects doing better.

Duos from United, Liverpool and Manchester City had better records but Eto’o’s ratio of a goal every 145.11 minutes was better than any other forward in the top flight, and bodes well for his time at Everton.

There is no real risk involved considering the player arrives on a free transfer. And if he continues his fine scoring form against some of the best England has to offer, Martinez will not be complaining.
