Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has spoken highly of Aston Villa central midfielder Douglas Luiz on the club’s official website.

Arteta worked with Luiz when he was a coach at Manchester City and is set to face the 22-year-old Brazil international this weekend.

Arsenal will take on Villa at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday, and the Brazilian is likely to start against the Gunners in North London.

Arteta told Arsenal’s official website: “They got Emi, they got a striker, they got Ross and Douglas Luiz who is a player who is starting to show us he is capable. He is a player that I know really well from my time and City and I think the time is benefiting them together.”

Good signing for Aston Villa

Luiz has been on the books of Villa since the summer of 2019 when he joined from City for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £15 million.

The youngster has proved to be a very good signing for the Villans and has established himself as an important player in manager Dean Smith’s team.

According to WhoScored, the Brazilian made 28 starts and eight substitute appearances in the Premier League for Villa last season, scoring three goals and providing two assists in the process.

So far this season, Luiz has provided one assist in six Premier League games for the Villans, according to WhoScored.
