Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has been full of praise for Virgil van Dijk after his supreme form since returning from injury.

The Dutchman was out of action for almost a year after picking up an injury against Everton in late 2020, but he’s returned to the side this season and he’s immediately returned to form.

Ferdinand says that van Dijk looked a bit shaky upon his initial return, but he states that he’s now reclaimed his throne as the best defender around.

What’s been said?

Ferdinand was full of praise for van Dijk.

“Since his injury by the way, he started off a bit shaky, but the way he’s come back and absolutely solidified the defence, you have to say again that comes down to professionalism and work ethic on the training pitch, getting yourself right after that. He deserves all of the plaudits he’s getting right now, top defender, he’s the best defender about right now,” Ferdinand said.

Back to his best

Ferdinand says that van Dijk looked a bit shaky upon his return, but even then he looked like one of the best defenders in the league.

Van Dijk may not have looked at is best at the beginning of the season, but Liverpool conceded just one goal in their opening five league games. If that’s shaky then that just goes to show the standards the Dutchman has set in recent years.

Right now, van Dijk is once again looking like a one-man army at the back, and his contributions could be the deciding factor on whether or not the Reds win their second Premier League title this term.
