Even Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta knows how good Tottenham Hotspur’s latest signing is.
On Wednesday, Tottenham announced a second capture of the summer transfer window by unveiling the addition of Fraser Forster.
Towering goalkeeper Forster helped Southampton to a 1-0 victory over Arsenal in the final stretch of the 2021-22 campaign.
The Gunners boss labelled Spurs’ new recruit as ‘exceptional‘ on the day and even some supporters on the red half of the North London divide might acknowledge that for a number-two option, Forster is a cracking signing.
Ben Foster has been tenatively linked with a move to Arsenal this summer, which more stems from the player admitting that he wanted the transfer rather than Arteta and Edu wanting the veteran English keeper.
Forster reacted to the Tottenham move on Instagram on Thursday evening, with Foster responding by writing: “Congrats big dog.”
Joe Hart, a former England teammate of the 6’7 stopper, also weighed in by writing, ‘do your thing big man‘.
Arsenal should’ve challenged for Forster
Yes, Arteta has a world-class keeper in the form of Aaron Ramsdale.
But with USA international Matt Turner coming in to replace the linked-away Bernd Leno, well maybe Arsenal should be signing another goalkeeper, too.
Clearly there’s a lot of confidence that Turner can replace the Germany international – still at the club as things stand – but he is untested outside of Major League Soccer.
Forster, on the other hand, is good enough to genuinely challenge Hugo Lloris between the sticks at Tottenham and it’ll be a fascinating battle next term and beyond.
There’s no challenge at Colney, however.
Ramsdale will be comfortably ahead of Turner in Arteta’s pecking order next season and perhaps Forster would’ve provided not only better cover than the American, but more competition, too.
