It’s been almost a year since Arsenal terminated Mesut Ozil’s contract in North London.
Last season, Ozil had been exiled by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
He wasn’t included in the Gunners’ Premier League or Europa League squad, prompting Arteta and Edu to release him from his £350,000-a-week contract six months early.
The former Germany international wound up signing for Fenerbahce and despite an indifferent first six months in Turkey, Ozil is finding his feet in a big way.
This season, the 33-year-old playmaker has netted seven goals for the Turkish outfit in 16 outings across all competitions.
For context, the only Arsenal player in Arteta’s ranks to have netted more than Ozil is Emile Smith Rowe, who has scored eight in all tournaments.
Not sustainable
The former Real Madrid maestro is clearly enjoying his football again.
But Arteta – and most Arsenal fans – will know that his resurgence simply isn’t sustainable.
As sure as sunrise, Ozil will inevitably drop his standards and begin infuriating the Fenerbahce faithful, just like he did at the Emirates Stadium.
Doubting his ability is impossible, because he’s a stupidly-talented footballer, but his mentality and attitude has deprived him of a much greater career in this sport.
He might be producing at the moment but, in the near future, Ozil will show the Turkish side exactly why he was exiled at Arsenal.
