Eredivisie defender Josh Brenet wants a move away from FC Twente this summer while confirming that Fulham showed ‘serious interest’ in taking him to the Premier League during the January transfer window.

While Fulham deserve massive credit for the successes of Joao Palhinha, Willian, Manor Solomon and Bernd Leno – all four thriving as the Cottagers marked their return to the top-flight with a tenth-place finish – there was to be rather less success when it came to bringing a new right-back to West London.

Kevin Mbabu barely kicked a ball in anger before being cut loose in January. Cedric Soares, meanwhile, did not come close to ousting the fantastic Kenny Tete during a forgettable loan spell.

The hope will be then that, if Josh Brenet arrives from FC Twente at long last, he will thrive where his predecessors failed.

A long-standing Fulham target, the 29-year-old Dutch international held talks with the Cottagers in January before Cedric signed on the dotted line instead. Marco Silva’s side may now be tempted to renew their interest, with Cedric returning to Arsenal.

Could Eredivisie ace Joshua Brenet finally join Fulham?

“The club knows my dreams and ambitions. I would love to take another step up this summer,” Brenet tells Voetbal International.

“I’m very curious about where my ceiling is. I had great years at PSV, after which it didn’t work out in Germany (with Hoffenheim). At Twente, I got into a flow again and now I’m very curious what exactly my level is.

“Last winter, Fulham showed a serious interest in me. That’s not to say I can handle Premier League football just like that, but a club of a similar level, I would like to try.

“I’m ambitious.”

An excellent ball-carrier who loves to embark upon marauding runs into the final third; Brenet was a major part of a Twente side who finished fifth in the Eredivisie table last term. He scored a highly-impressive nine goals while setting up four more.

And Twente may be forced to consider offers with Brenet entering the final 12 months of his contract in Enschede.
