Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has named West Ham’s Declan Rice as a player he thinks would make a great pundit in the future.

Carragher is, of course, one of the most notable pundits in the game right now. He’s one of Sky Sports’ main men while he also works for CBS covering Champions League games.

However, just like his playing career, Carragher’s punditry run won’t go on forever, and there will be a next generation of former players working in the media.

Carragher reckons Rice could be brilliant on a show like Monday Night Football due to the personality he shows on social media.

What’s been said?

Carragher and Gary Neville were speaking about the next generation of pundits.

“Which pundit do you think that’s emerging now who could go on Monday Night football and work in that environment?” Neville asked.

“There’s one player who stands out to me who is very young and he’s got a bit of something about him and a bit of personality. It’s Declan Rice actually, I don’t know if he’d make a good pundit, but he’s bubbly on social media, he’s on Twitter having a laugh and a joke. It’s not just about knowing the game, you have to have that personality,” Carragher said.

Entertaining

As Carragher says, these days pundits need to be as entertaining as they are informative, and Rice certainly fits that bill.

The midfielder is already a bit of a social media phenomenon and if his good friend Mason Mount also went into punditry we could have the next generation’s version of Jimmy Greaves and Ian St. John.

Of course, Rice is just 22, so the idea of his post-playing career is miles away yet, but there may well be a job at Sky waiting for him in 20 years’ time.
