Stan Collymore wants Dele Alli to become England’s captain.
Popular football pundit Stan Collymore strongly believes that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli should be given the England captaincy.
Great players have captained the England national team in the past – the likes of David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, and Wayne Rooney have led the Three Lions in big tournaments in the last decade.
However, after Rooney’s retirement from international football, Gareth Southgate must find a good captain for his side. At this moment, Jordan Henderson and Harry Kane are favourites for that role, but Collymore believes Alli should be given the responsibility.
Collymore says that Alli can be spiteful at times, but he can do wonders if he’s given extra responsibility.
The former Aston Villa striker believes that responsibility isn’t a bad thing. While Harry Kane is doing a good job of scoring goals, Alli could marshal the team from midfield.
Collymore adds that Alli would be an outstanding choice for the role.
The 21-year-old is a brilliant footballer, no doubt, but a captain should be one who commands the respect of other players, especially the senior players.
On that note, Kane is probably a better choice than Alli for the England captaincy role.
“I know he can be spiteful, he can be antsy and that even his manager Mauricio Pochettino had a little pop the other day,” wrote Collymore for The Mirror.
“But this is the boy who needs making into a man and if Gareth Southgate were to make him captain ahead of the World Cup finals we’d see the boy fly.
“Some of you will say the captaincy would take away some of his flare but that’s utter tosh and I’m sick of players being mollycoddled.
“Responsibility isn’t a bad thing, it’s a great thing, and while Harry Kane is getting on with scoring the goals Alli could be marshalling the team from midfield.
“He could lead England into the next two or three tournaments — he really is the outstanding choice.”
