Stan Collymore has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur should make the League Cup their number one priority.

Spurs reached the last 16 of the competition that they have won four times in their history, but were knocked out following an inspired second-half display from West Ham at Wembley – prompting Pochettino to suggest that the trophy was not a priority to him as they continue to battle in the Premier League and Champions League.

But Collymore has suggested that the Argentinian should have done all he could to keep Spurs in the competition, and insisted that Tottenham should put it on a pedestal at the start of each season.

“But he should be making it Spurs’ No.1 priority in the next two or three years as they try to win their first trophy since 2008.
“He should be saying ‘we want this league cup, I want to do what Jose Mourinho did when he went into Chelsea and then Manchester United and put some silverware on the mantelpiece early by winning the league cup. It can be a springboard.”
It would, of course, be fantastic for Tottenham if they were able to win the Carabao Cup at some stage as, as Collymore suggests, it would send a message out that Spurs have ascended to another level.
But it is also incredibly difficult to criticise Pochettino for wanting to rotate his options to make sure that they are in the best shape to play as strong a team as possible in the Premier League and Champions League. Having the trophy would be great for the club as a statement, but surely few fans would be pleased if it jeopardised their chances in the top flight and of progressing in the Champions League.
