Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has written in The Mirror that Arsenal should sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.

Collymore believes that Arsenal need to make a big statement, and signing the former Tottenham winger would help the Gunners do just that.

“I would think big and approach Real Madrid for the services of Gareth Bale – if you don’t ask, you don’t get,” Collymore wrote in The Mirror.

“It’s touch and go whether the forward would want to swap the Bernabeu for the Emirates but if Arsenal are serious about climbing back up the table they need to attract a game-changer.

“Yes, he’s an ex-Spurs player but Gunners need to make a statement. What better way to do so than by bringing Bale back to the Premier League?”

Two problems

The first obvious problem with Arsenal signing Bale is that the Wales international winger is a former Tottenham player.

The 27-year-old made his name at Spurs and is still adored by the White Hart Lane faithful. If Bale were to move to the Emirates Stadium, then he would lose quite a bit of popularity among the Spurs fans.

Moreover, would Arsenal fans actually want to see a player who was at their bitter North London rivals as recently as 2013 in their team?

The second problem is that it would be a massive step down for Bale if he were to switch Madrid for Arsenal.

Madrid are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and could win the Champions League and La Liga this season.

As for Arsenal, they are pretty much an also-ran in Europe’s premier club competition and may not finish in the top four of the Premier League this season.
