Not so long ago Manchester United were the dominant force in English football, and Liverpool were not even challenging for the Premier League title.
Under Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United were winning the Premier League title season after season, while Liverpool could not compete first with Chelsea and then with Manchester City and struggled to last the distance.
Things have changed now. United have not won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson left. These days they struggle to end up even in the top four.
Liverpool have clinched the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League in recent seasons under manager Jurgen Klopp and have become the main challenger to Manchester City’s dominance of English football.
United, though, are hoping to change that under new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. There is a buzz around Old Trafford now, and the hope is that the Red Devils will get back to their glory days soon.
ESPN reported this month that one of the changes that Ineos are planning to make bring in a new manager. England head coach Gareth Southgate is a name that some at Ineos like a lot.
Stan Collymore gives his verdict on Gareth Southgate to Manchester United rumour
Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore does not think that this is a good idea. The pundit has noted how the Anfield faithful did not like when Roy Hodgson was appointed the Reds manager.
Collymore wrote on CaughtOffSide: “Sticking with Gareth Southgate, ESPN reported this week that the England boss has significant support within the new INEOS-led hierarchy at Manchester United to succeed Erik ten Hag as manager if the Dutchman loses his job at the end of this season.

“If Gareth wins the Euros, he will deservingly be in the frame, however, I would preclude anybody from going into a club job, especially one the size of Man United, who hasn’t been doing it recently. Southgate hasn’t managed a club or taken a team through a full season since leaving Middlesbrough back in 2009.
“I think a club like Man United should be targeting a manager who is currently doing very well at his club and has a strong body of work behind him, which includes winning trophies – preferably in countries such as England, Spain, Italy and Germany.
“I could see the England boss being treated by Man United fans in the same way Liverpool supporters viewed Roy Hodgson. He has a good CV but they will always be perceived as not being very good as a result of being British, not playing the ball out from the back, and they don’t have that huge personality that many managers at big clubs have. Therefore, Southgate would not be my choice for the Old Trafford hot seat.”
My View: Manchester United should not hire Gareth Southgate
In my opinion, Manchester United should not make Gareth Southgate their next manager.
Southgate has done extremely well for England. The Three Lions have become a major force to be reckoned with in world football now because of the 53-year-old.
However, managing at the international level is very different to managing a major football club.
Manchester United are arguably the biggest club in the world. They have a massive global fanbase, and the expectations are huge at United, who have an interest in striker Benjamin Sesko.
I think that if United move on from Erik ten Hag, then they have to hire someone who has been a success at club level and would be able to make an immediate impact. Thomas Tuchel would not be a bad option.
The potential new manager has to be able to cope with the daily pressure of managing a major club and have to win matches week in and week out.
Southgate last managed a football club back in 2009. Things have changed a lot since then.
