Writing in the Mirror, Stan Collymore has told Jordan Henderson what he must do to become a top midfielder at Liverpool.

The Reds captain has often been the subject of fierce debate at Anfield ever since joining from Sunderland in 2011.

He has shown marked improvement over the last year since Jurgen Klopp took charge at the club in October.

He went some way to answering his detractors last week as he scored a superb solo goal in the 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Collymore is one of those who is yet to be fully convinced and has told the England midfielder what he needs to do to change his opinion.

“To be a central midfielder for Liverpool , you have to be multi-faceted. You have to provide the assists, the long-range passes, short-range passes and goals,” he told the Mirror.

“Rather than trying to be the new Steven Gerrard he needs to concentrate on being Jordan Henderson.”

“That means using his great engine and his big heart to get more involved in and around the 18-yard box. If he does that, he can go on to become a top-drawer midfielder.”

A look at the stats this season shows that Collymore has a point when it comes to Henderson.

In Liverpool’s five games so far he has registered the fewest key passes per game and the fewest shots on target per game of any Reds midfielder.

Those kind of stats are disappointing and he will have to show vast improvement in both to start convincing doubters like Collymore that he is good enough.
