Stan Collymore has paid tribute to the ‘exceptional’ Tyrone Mings after Aston Villa’s narrow defeat on Saturday.

The Villans looked on course for a shock opening-day win at Tottenham last night after John McGinn’s early strike was the difference for so long.

But Tanguy Ndombele equalised for the hosts on 73 minutes, before a late double from Harry Kane was enough to see off a spirited Aston Villa effort.

Mings – who set the Villans back a potential club-record £25 million – and centre-back partner Bjorn Engels repelled wave after wave of Spurs attack throughout the evening.

And Collymore has described the big man’s performance as ‘absolutely top drawer’.

If Mings and Engels replicate their performances throughout the season for newly-promoted Aston Villa, Dean Smith’s side will have a wonderful first year back in the big time.

Mings is a massively popular player among the supporters, having originally joined on loan in January and helped the West Midlands side to promotion in May.

Despite the result, there were loads of positives for the Villa boss and no doubt there are plenty of reasons to be cheerful.
