Stan Collymore feels that Everton need to bring in some young players in January.

Stan Collymore has told the Daily Mirror that Everton boss Ronald Koeman needs to reduce the average age of his squad.

Everton have a number of older players in their team, especially in defensive areas.

Leighton Baines, Gareth Barry and Phil Jagielka are all reaching the twilight of their careers, and Collymore feels that Koeman needs to inject some youth into Everton’s team.

“Koeman – and his brother and right-hand man Erwin – need to rectify that,” Collymore said. “They need to identify and prioritise key areas of the side and act sooner rather than later.

“In the next two transfer windows, Koeman has to lower the squad’s age significantly, while trying to keep the Merseysiders competitive in the top flight.”

Everton should have money to spend in January, and Koeman is likely to want to invest.

The Toffees started the campaign in wonderful form, but they have fallen away slightly in recent weeks.

Everton are now in eighth place in the Premier League table, after winning just once in their last 10 matches.

The Toffees’ latest result was a 1-1 draw with Manchester United, with a Leighton Baines penalty rescuing a point.

Everton are next in action against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
