Stan Collymore says that Sunderland should appoint Kevin Phillips as their next manager.
Popular football pundit Stan Collymore says that the Sunderland board should consider appointing Kevin Philipps as their next manager.
The Black Cats are rock bottom in the Championship, and are currently in big mess. They have not won in their last 13 games in all competitions, and are winless in their last 12 Championship games.
Collymore says that Sunderland are a “difficult” club to manage, and there is a deep-rooted problem at the Stadium of Light.
The former Liverpool player suggests that Sunderland should allow a manager to take a broad overview and strip the whole club back.
The other option would be to appoint someone like Kevin Phillips, who was a club legend at the Wearside club.
The 44-year-old has played for Watford, Southampton, Aston Villa, West Brom, Crystal Palace and Leicester City during his playing career, but he is most remembered for his spell at Sunderland, where he scored 130 goals for the Black Cats in six seasons.
Phillips also made eight appearances for England. He has worked under Nigel Pearson at Leicester City, and Gary Rowett at Derby County.
Collymore adds that Sunderland need a “magic bullet”, and Phillips is the right man to provide it.
“The other would be to appoint someone such as Kevin Phillips, who was such a legend up there,” wrote Collymore in his column for The Sunday People (printed edition; November 5th – page 47). Kev has worked under Nigel Pearson at Leicester City, and Gary Rowett, at Derby. He’s been around.
“The Sunderland job needs a magic bullet – and Kevin can provide that.”
