Stan Collymore has written on Twitter that he “genuinely hopes” Newcastle United find themselves with a good owner if Mike Ashley ends up leaving the club.

Ashley delighted Newcastle fans on Monday by officially putting the Magpies up for sale as the end of his 10-year reign looks to be drawing closer.

BBC Sport reported that 44-year-old Financier Amanda Staveley is a “potential suitor”, with The Sun reporting today that she’s in talks over a deal.

Ashley has never been hugely popular with the Newcastle fans for the way in which he has run the club, though his perception among the St James’s Park faithful took a turn for the worst this past summer when manager Rafael Benitez found himself working with less of a transfer budget than he previously thought.

The controversial figure looks finally willing to sell up, however, and Collymore is hopeful that the “great club” can rediscover a sense of normality after the “soap opera” of recent years.
