Former player and current pundit Stan Collymore has taken to social networking site Twitter in order to label Aston Villa’s latest 2-0 defeat at Preston North End an unacceptable result.

The Villans spent heavily in the summer as new owner Dr. Tony Xia and newly-appointed boss Roberto Di Matteo made all the right noises regarding an immediate return to the Premier League.

However, after 11 matches of the Championship campaign, Villa now sit in 19th position and their latest 2-0 defeat at Preston extends their winless run to nine league matches.

The promotion dream has quickly gone pear-shaped, and Collymore warns via Twitter that this season is already turning in to a ruinous campaign for everyone involved at Villa Park.

Villa have an impressive frontline boasting some of the Championship’s better players in Ross McCormack, Rudy Gestede and Jack Grealish yet they just haven’t seemed to click at all.

Roberto Di Matteo’s side have struggled to score on the road, finding just two league goals in their opening six away matches and without that prolificacy in the final third they are destined to struggle.

Preston didn’t have to work too hard to beat Villa, with the visitors posting just two efforts on target throughout the 90 minutes despite having the lion’s share of the ball and numerous promising situations.

The result sees Villa sit ten points behind rivals Birmingham City who currently occupy the final playoff spot.
