Former player and current pundit Stan Collymore has predicted via Twitter that Leicester City will run out 2-0 winners in their opening Premier League encounter with Hull City at the KC Stadium.
The Foxes shocked all by winning the Premier League title last season, and while many feel they won’t repeat the trick this time around, they still possess most of their title-winning squad.
The one big loss for Claudio Ranieri’s men is N’Golo Kante after he was sold to Chelsea, yet in new signing Nampalys Mendy they have a decent replacement, while other areas have been strengthened.
Hull, in contrast, start the season managerless following Steve Bruce’s decision to resign and a lack of transfer activity in terms of recruitment sees them heavily tipped for the drop.
Collymore, speaking via Twitter for his Boyle Sports blog, predicts Leicester will open their defence of the Premier League title with a victory at the KC Stadium.
“I don’t believe they will retain the title. Too many clubs have spent too much money for that to happen. But I can certainly see them being top five or six, realistically top eight,” he said of Leicester.
“I’m going to go for a clear victory for Leicester City. I’m going to go for Jamie Vardy to notch as he did in the Community Shield. 2-0 to Leicester and they’re off and running in their defence of the title.”
Quite a number of pundits have tipped the Foxes to struggle this season as they look to balance both the league and the Champions League, yet with the squad still intact that would be a surprise.
Hull, however, have reportedly only 13 fit players to choose from for their upcoming encounter and without major investment it would be difficult to see how they could possibly avoid the drop come next May.
