Sunderland are struggling for survival in the Premier League at the moment.

Former Nottingham Forest and Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has praised Sunderland chairman Ellis Short in The Mirror.

Collymore has praised Short for keeping faith in Sunderland manager David Moyes when things got tough.

The Black Cats are still in danger of getting relegation from the Premier League at the end of the season, but their form has improved recently.

Sunderland have won three of their last four Premier League matches, including a 2-1 victory over Leicester City at the Stadium of Light at the weekend.

Collymore, who is now a well-known pundit, has praised Short for not sacking Moyes when results and performances were disappointing earlier in the season.

“Maybe it was a case of ‘Oh, ye of little faith’ with me and David Moyes at the start of the season,” Collymore wrote in The Mirror.

“Because I watched Sunderland on Saturday and they were very good against Leicester as they moved the ball through the lines.

“I had it on good authority that Moyes would not be going anywhere when the Wearsiders had that troubled patch at the start of the season.

“When players know that, they realise that if they don’t knuckle down there will be only one winner. A lot of other chairmen could learn from the backing Ellis Short gave his man.”

Sunderland are playing with confidence at the moment, and Moyes seems to be gradually getting the best out of his players.

There is a long way to go this season, and the Black Cats need to continue to perform if they are to avoid the dreaded drop to the Championship at the end of the season.

Moyes’s side are third from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with just 11 points from 14 matches.
